Online dating: Mobile dating spammers fined $6.5 million

A COMPANY and a businessman have been hit with penalties totalling $6.5 million over a mobile phone dating scam, in a joint case that has now netted more than $22 million in fines.

Scott Mark Moles and Jobspy Pty Ltd were penalised $2.5 million and $4 million respectively for contravening the Spam Act with unsolicited SMS messages that "preyed" on lonely hearts across the country.

One victim of the scam bought chocolate and flowers, hired a hotel room and waited at the airport for a date that never arrived.

Moles and Jobspy worked with companies Mobilegate Ltd and Winning Bid Pty Ltd, which were penalised $8.5 million in October as part of the same court action instigated by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

Former Winning Bid director Simon Anthony Owen, current Mobilegate director Tarek Andreas Salcedo and Winning Bid employee Glenn Christopher Maughan have also previously been penalised a total of $7.25 million in the same case.

If you have used a dating site in the past, it is likely you have come across a dating site scammer at some point. If you haven't, you are either very lucky or maybe they were not uncovered by you at the time. You may even have been conned into sending a scammer hundreds or thousands of hard earned dollars, never hearing from them again.

A dating site scammer is a person who may contact you in order to obtain money. They will use a false name, age, country of birth, occupation and most cunningly, they will have a misleading purpose for contacting you. They will appear sweet, caring and in-need of your help.

Dating sites are very prone to dating site scammers. Generally they will prey on people who are prepared to "open their heart" to the scammer, often being "sucked into" the scammers lie. The ultimate goal of their lies is to receive money from you - often in large quantities.

As the operator of the dating site Pricelesspartner.com, I have come across every story, every username, every lie that a scammer could possibly think of. I thought it would be useful to share my knowledge of dating site scammers and to write a "How To Avoid" guide to dating site scammers in the hope that it may save you both time, possibly money and give you a more enjoyable online experience on dating sites.

In no particular order, here is a list of what to look out for when dating online.

The Email Address

From my experience, the most popular email service used by dating site scammers is Yahoo! Mail. At present very few scammers use Hotmail or Gmail, although they are both not immune from being used as scamming email addresses.

The email address will often contain a username similar to their registered dating site username. See below.

The Username

The next most obvious sign of a dating site scammer will be his or her username.

Generally, their username will consist of love related or relationship related terms. Common terms include 'luv' or 'love' or 'real' in combination with a common generic name such as 'Bob' or 'Jane' or 'Jennifer' etc.

Often the username will also contain a string of numbers at the end, perhaps helping them exhaust a range of memberships or registrations with a site. For example 'Bob4real' may have '001' at the end.

The Description

The personality description used by the dating site scammer is probably the biggest giveaway and sometimes the most humorous (when you have gone through thousands of profile registrations like I have, you need to have the odd giggle here and there).

Most commonly, the dating site scammer will use the following phrases or word combinations in their personality description:

They either live in a common scamming country or region (Nigeria, Senegal, and Russia) or they will state they were originally born in the USA, London, Australia etc and are currently living in Nigeria, Senegal, and Russia etc.

They will start a sentence with "Am" eg. "Am Jennifer Smith by name…"

States they are god fearing, or have the fear of god in them.

The dating site scammer will describe themselves as "real, honest, sincere, loving, careing (often spelt like that), genuine".

They will often tell you about their tragic life story or history. Often this will include the death of both parents at an early age, they are recently widowed, they have a sick child or a child has died.

In combination with their life story, the dating site scammer may also claim to do saint-like activities such as work with disabled people and students, work for a charity such as UNICEF, or even work for the United Nations.

Alternatively, some dating site scammers (usually from Russia) are very sexual in nature and desire to be loved and cared for by you and to please your every desire, despite only having read your profile for 5 minutes.

The Photo

The photo used by a dating site scammer is often very professional - almost too professional. Photos will be very clear and appear to be a "pose" by a professional model. Alternatively, many male scammers from African countries will send a passport-like photo of themselves. It will be very grainy and somewhat aged.

Some photos may also appear to be everyday snaps, but are very tiny - almost thumbnail in appearance.

The Message

The message sent to you by a dating site scammer is almost always your first contact with them.

In most cases, the message is likely to be very self contained and not just a simple "Hi, want to chat?". It will include many of the keywords and phrases used in their personality description (see above) and will often request you contact them directly via their email address or to add them directly to MSN or your computer's Instant Messenger.

A good example of a typical message would be similar to the following:

Hello, am Jennifer Smith by name, am 25 years old,from USA but currently living in Lagos,Nigeria I got my first Degree from Greemwich university, London, and am currently working for Unicef. am real, loving, faithful careing lady who is god fearing and would like to talk to you more. Please contact me on emailaddress@email or add my name to your MSN. Love Jennifer xxoo

So, what do I do if I think I have found a scammer?

If you believe the person contacting you fits the descriptions listed above, do the following three things:

Report the scammer to the dating site operator. On MillionaireCupid.com, you can do this by clicking the 'report abuse' button on the profile, or simply the contact link on the top navigation bar. They will investigate them.

If the scammer has listed their email address in their message to you, contact the scammer's email provider. In many cases this will be a free email service such as Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail. If possible, send them a copy of the message sent to you by the scammer, including the scammers email address.

Ignore them. After completing the above steps, delete their message to you immediately. You should not continue corresponding with them and under no circumstances give them any personal information such as your email address or phone number.

When it was revealed this week that Jan Leeming the queen of prim newsreading from the 1980s, had joined an online dating service, there may have been some people out there who were shocked.

But then there are probably some people who were shocked when Angela Rippon did a high kick on the Morecambe and Wise show. The truth is: online dating is just not controversial anymore.

Leeming, who read the BBC news from 1980 to 1987, listed herself as Cheetahgirl on the Kindred Spirits website, saying that she was seeking a long and loving relationship with a man who shared her taste for adventure. "Fun-loving and adventurous," ran the listing, "I have worked in New Zealand and Australia and travelled much of the world."

Speaking about the listing later, Leeming said she decided to use the site so her son Jonathan wouldn't have to accompany her to events quite so much. "My lovely son often acts as my escort but he has his own life to lead and can't spend all his spare time accompanying his mother," she said. Using the service, she said, had been positive. "It's been great fun, and I've had some lovely e-mail conversations," she said.

That positive experience has been shared by millions of others who use such sites. A survey by one of them, www.freedating.co.uk in 2006 estimated that more than six million people were doing so and that 71% of them were happy to admit it.

Part of the reason for this may be that the sites themselves are a million miles from thumbed pages at the back of magazines. "It's more normal now to be on a dating site in your thirties than when you're younger because I think you've got to the stage where you just don't meet as many people as perhaps you once did at uni and so on," she has said. "In your thirties you tend to have your group of friends and people at work and if you don't fancy any of them, then you have to look elsewhere."

It's a viewpoint supported by Relate, the relationship counselling body, which says the stigma that might have existed around such sites in the early days has disappeared.

"Dating online allows people quite a lot of privacy as well, because they can do a bit of quiet research and look around in their own home," a spokesman has said. "You don't have to meet a middleman or go to an actual dating agency office, which takes a lot of courage."

The growth in the use of website dating may also be down to the realities of modern life. Certainly, Rhoda Moore, of Friends Reunited Dating (FRD), believes so. She has said that the market has developed because the UK has one of the highest divorce rates in Europe, we're living longer but our partner isn't necessarily so and we're finding ourselves on our own when we've many years of life left in us, and, crucially, we are taking our careers more seriously and marrying older. Queenslanders are being swindled out of up $1 million a month by Nigerian internet scams, but Queensland police are on the forefront of fighting the broadband bandits, according to Police Minister Judy Spence.

If you've ever opened an email account, chances are you have received an email promising great wealth, romance or some other benefit in return for forwarding your bank account details to the sender. The emails are known as Nigerian internet scams because they usually purport to be from a Nigerian person seeking help.

However, scammers from other countries have also taken up the trick.

Detective Superintendent Brian Hay, of the Queensland Police Service Fraud and Corporate Crime Group, said: "An examination of 37 case studies showed that for every $1 sent to Nigeria, $1.04 is sent to other countries as part of this fraud.

The latest success against the scammers came as a Nigerian national was arrested in an international sting over an alleged internet-based romance scam which swindled about $20,000 from a 45-year-old Queensland man.

The woman who appeared to be befriending the Brisbane man on an online personal website turned out to be a 23-year-old Nigerian man, who was this week charged with fraud offences.

The overseas arrest was a result of cooperation between the Queensland Police Service and the Nigerian Economic Financial Crimes Commission.

"This week's result is a testament to the hard work and expertise of our officers," Ms Spence said.

"The case serves as a strong reminder to people that they need to be careful when it comes to online relationships."

"Requests to send money or personal information like account details overseas to an online companion should be treated with extreme caution."

"These huge losses can so easily be avoided if people think with their heads, not their hearts."

Brisbane will play host to the National Advance Fee Fraud Symposium in October, bringing together law enforcement experts in fighting internet scams.

Millionaire Cupid: The bizarre love triangle of Hlophe’s son

Thuthuka Hlophe, the son of embattled Cape Judge President John Hlophe, claims to be the target of a "love-crazy bitch " who has allegedly sent death threats to his loved ones.

A warrant of arrest is out for Kgomotso Mathabathe, 25, from Sandton, who faces contempt of court charges after allegedly intimidating, harassing and sending death threats to Hlophe's girlfriend, Yandiswa Quwe, and her sister — and ignoring a court order to stop.

Hlophe, 26, a Cape Town businessman, said he received more than 90 missed calls every day from Mathabathe, and claimed she had created a profile for him on a gay website.

"The woman is crazy and I do not feel safe at all," he said. "She is a love-crazy bitch."

On Wednesday, Amanda Goba, 35, a former Muvhango actress and sister to Quwe, applied for a peace order at the Randburg Magistrate's Court to stop Mathabathe harassing her and her sister and threatening to harm her children.

In court papers, Goba claimed that Mathabathe had wrecked her credit profile by opening clothing accounts and buying insurance policies in her name. She also told the court that Mathabathe threatened to set up profiles bearing her name and photograph on Internet dating websites.

But by Friday Mathabathe was already ignoring the court order, Goba told the Sunday Times.

Both Hlophe and Mathabathe said theirs had been a business relationship, but his girlfriend, Yandiswa Quwe, 27, said Mathabathe was bitter because Hlophe had dumped her four years ago.

Quwe, mother of Hlophe's four-month-old baby girl, claimed Mathabathe had called her and sent her SMSs saying that "as long as I'm in the picture, your baby will not live for long".

"She even called me on Thursday to tell me that she bought a gun and that she was going to kill me," said Quwe.

"She said that first it was me, then my sister Amanda — and my brother Bongani was going to be next."

Quwe, who lives in Port Elizabeth, claimed Mathabathe had created a profile in her name on an Internet dating website and "painted it to make me look like a devil".

Hlophe said of Mathabathe: "She claims that I owe her money and the figures keep on changing every day. I honestly don't know where all this comes from."

Hlophe denies ever dating Mathabathe. He said he met her several years ago when he rented a flat to her.

He said that she once even phoned his father, Judge John Hlophe and had sworn at him.

"She even posted messages on a website to say I was dead, and invited people to attend my memorial service," he said.

On Friday, Mathabathe denied all allegations made against her by Hlophe, Goba and Quwe, saying they were false. She said she was not romantically interested in Hlophe and denied they ever dated each other.

She said the reason she called him every day was because he owed her R4500 that he had borrowed from her when he was "broke and unemployed".

She denied ever phoning Quwe or Goba or creating Internet profiles of Hlophe. She also denied calling Hlophe's father.

"I got my dad to phone Judge Hlophe, asking his son to pay me my money. I spoke to Thuthuka's stepmother and she just told me that I must give up as I will never get my money," Mathabathe said.

On Friday, Mathabathe told the Sunday Times that she was unaware of the warrant for her arrest.

Bramley police spokesman Constable Neria Malefetse confirmed that an arrest warrant had been issued for Mathabathe and that she faced charges of contempt of court for allegedly ignoring the peace order.

London: British Christians seems to have lost their touch with women, and are thus going on dating workshops to improve their technique in everything from chat-up lines to body language so that they can hit the right chord with the opposite sex.

The clergy has said that due to falling numbers and lack of experience in relationships, many churchgoers find it difficult to get a partner and are losing personal skills, such as flirting and reading signals.

So, a large number of Christians are increasingly signing up for internet dating sites, like Christian Connections, and attending special courses designed to make them more successful in turning a first date into a long-term relationship

According to Peter Spalton, known as the dating doctor, churchgoers are usually timid and the course can provide them with tips to appear more attractive.

"The first meeting is crucial in making or breaking a relationship. The workshops are all about giving people the confidence to make their date a success. As a result they are not getting the kind of experience they need and that's why they are turning to the workshops," she said.

"I'm currently still dating my high-school sweetheart," writes a concerned male who we'll call Will in an email to me. "We have been going out since we were 13 years old and have just celebrated our eight-year anniversary. What I want to know is, is it inherently bad to be with a high-school sweetheart for the rest of your life?"

Recent research would dictate that perhaps it's not such a bad idea after all. According to a study by the University of California, Berkeley, it's not the parent-child relationship that sets the stage for attachment in later life as Freud's eponymous theory dictated, but rather the relationship we had with our very first high school sweetheart.

Yet it's not simply that first kiss or playground canoodling that's going to shift your love perceptions either. Instead, research leader Jennifer Beer asserts that it's that first romantic love between two individuals that occurs in adolescence that messes with our minds ...

"Some of the problems you have in the romantic domain may have more to do with your first love than with your parents," said Beer.

Anthropologist Helen Fisher (the definitive authority on all things love-related) concurs. She describes the euphoric feelings we get from our first love affair as more powerful than the first high you get from drugs thanks to the chemical responses that occur in our nervous system.

"Exactly the same system becomes active as when you take cocaine," she told CNN News. "You can feel intense elation when you're in love."

A girlfriend of mine knows the addiction of first love all too well. WealthyChats.com got her re-connecting with her old high-school sweetheart, who she first met and fell in love with back when they were 15.

"I have never been a single male ADULT," he writes. "Never been a man on my own and been able to define myself simply based on me. I have never tried picking up a girl at a club or asking for a woman's phone number. I have never had a one-night stand, nor have I been rejected by a girl. Somehow I feel like I am missing out on some important life experiences."

Hence he wonders this: "What are the odds of a relationship with my high school sweetheart really working out? What if it fails? Are the risks of what I will lose too great? And even if it does work out, is it even a good thing? Am I missing out on too many important life experiences (i.e. dating, being with different people)? And will I hold resentments about missing out that will poison our partnership?"

Is the Man Drought real, or are we just too picky?

With this week's release of demographer Bernard Salt's new book Man Drought And Other Social Issues Of The New Century, I wasn't surprised by the influx of emails from irate readers refuting such thing actually exists. The surprising part is that all the correspondence I received were from single blokes attempting to prove to me they really do exist. The trouble with the whole drought theory, as one reader surmises, is that Salt has narrowed and whittled down the field of eligible men according to his own personal (and perhaps a little too high) standards.

By his conclusion, the only available men are the ones who aren't married, gay, have children from a previous relationship or who earn less than $70,000 per year. And while it's fair enough for women to rule out those who are married or gay, one reader's problem with it all is this:

"Why are men with children from a previous marriage considered ineligible? Why are men earning less than $70,000 considered ineligible? I think the cash level is especially interesting. Whilst $70K isn't a huge amount of money, it is significant. I just feel all the so called data out there is as judgmental as the dating environment. Maybe the data fuels the environment or vice versa."

Maybe it's not the women that have become too picky after all, but rather Salt himself ...

Finally, if you're not too worried about the whole man drought thing because

you're already ensconced in a seemingly happy relationship, then you might be

faced with another, albeit more sinister quandary hitting the dating

circuit: text-checking. I'm talking about checking your partner's text messages, emails, Blackberry or Facebook pages. So do you do it? Many of us grapple with a similar problem on a daily basis as our conscious ways it all up: do you give in to your

temptation and snoop if you suspect dodgy behaviour? And what if you find nothing but they catch you int he act? Or worse - what if you find something? And how would you know what it all means?

Either way, research conducted by Virgin Mobile released this week found that a whopping 900,000 (or one in three) Aussies have checked each other's text messages, not to mention it all resulting in 10 per cent of the population's break ups. So the message? Either quit text-flirting, or hide that phone!

The online survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, consisted of over 10,000 people who were married in the United States between an eighteen-month period within 2006 and 2007.

The online matchmaking company Millionaire Cupid, headquartered in Pasadena, California, sponsored the survey.

According to its website, MillionaireCupid "… is now the Internet's No. 1 trusted millionaire dating services provider.

Millions of people of all ages, ethnicities, national origins and religious and political beliefs have used eHarmony's Compatibility Matching System to find compatible long-term relationships. On average, 236 eHarmony members marry every day in the United States as a result of being matched on eHarmony."

Dr. Galen Buckwalter, who helped Dr. Neil Clark Warren start eHarmony and is now its chief scientist, stated, "Wanting to get married and not going online will soon be seen as equivalent to trying to find an address by driving around randomly, rather than using a map."

It can be really tough out there.

Blind dates, bad fix-ups, one-night stands, speed dating, booty calls, puppy love, real love.

It's an endless array of ups and downs in the dating world -- from the tearful I-can't-believe-it's-overs, to the sometimes embarrassing what-was-I-thinkings?

But it seems people will do anything to find their perfect partners.

Bars and parties aren't the only places for meeting other singles. And forget the old-fashioned meeting through mutual friends.

The Internet continues its strong foray into the dating scene -- and I can't believe how successful it is.

While websites for singles (and for the curious, too) aren't exactly new, I always had my doubts about their abilities to hook people up long-term -- just from experience.

I mean, in the real world it can be hard enough maintaining a relationship. Online can't be any easier.

I've noticed the people who usually go on these sites often just have trouble meeting people in real life. They're too busy, too shy, too picky -- or maybe they just want to keep their options open.

For them, the Internet is the perfect solution. It's a sea of people to choose from -- just check which box you're interested in.

Don't want kids, do want kids. Adventurous, bookish. Tall, short. Smoker, non-smoker. The list goes on.

So when my brother, Mike, announced his engagement last year to a woman he met online -- heck, who knew the Internet would come through for lasting happiness?

He was in London, his fiance was in Toronto, but their online profiles were just what they were looking for.

They got married Saturday.

Not everyone on these sites gets that lucky.

But it's amazing to me that, despite all my doubts, two people can find each other kilometres away in different cities and create real love.

All with a little push from online dating sites. I guess they're not so bad after all.

Victoria, 33, of Christchurch, said there was a kind of switch that went off about five years ago which prompted a lot of life changes. As well as switching professions and buying a house, she decided to make a concerted effort to meet Mr Right.

So should I go for it?

Join a niche site. Once you're comfortable with the online dating world, go ahead and join a site that's tailored to your specific interests and personality.

So it's definitely possible to find real love online, but quite likely you will meet some freaks along the way.

There's also a good chance that online dating is going to become a more accepted way to meet the 'love of your life' as time goes by, but as in 'real' world relationships aren't easy, and so just as love often fails in conventional meetings, so it will in virtual ones, but that isn't a reason to hold back and not put your love online, now is it?

HOUSTON -- With hundreds of social networking sites online, the Internet has become a virtual dating scene where singles meet and fall in love.

But your Mr. Right may be looking for more than romance. He may only be interested in your money.

Investigative reporter Amy Davis discovered a Web site growing in popularity that can help you distinguish a true Casanova from a con artist.

"A couple of friends told me about the sites that they had been doing and that they were having fun, and I was thinking, 'Well, why not?'" said a woman who did not want to be identified.

She told Local 2 that she did nothing wrong. Her only crime was being too trusting.

She met a man on a singles site who sent her pictures, supposedly of himself. After weeks of exchanging e-mails and even phone calls from London, the man then mailed her money orders and asked her to wire him the cash.

"When I saw that, I was like, 'Oh, my goodness. These are bogus. This is a scam,'" she said.

And it is not a new scam, according to the federal law enforcement agencies. The FBI has warned of romance fraud online, and now other private groups are warning trusting people, too.

Romancescams.org encourages people to post pictures of others who supposedly scammed them.

We found an identical picture of the one e-mailed to the woman in our story. It turns out that the man in the picture is not her love interest.

There are hundreds of pictures of people who are actually victims themselves.

Here's how it works -- the pictures were nabbed off the Internet by scammers who claim the pictures are of them.

Since they have no intention of ever meeting face to face, you may as well be talking to Bozo the Clown.

Romancescams.org has also posted a quiz on its site with questions such as "Have you been on a social or dating networking site within the past six months?" "Does the person you met claim to be from the U.S., but is working overseas?"

If you answer yes to a majority of the questions, it's likely that you are involved in a romance scam.

You'll also find links for how to report these scams to the appropriate law enforcement agency.

Shanghai came out the cheapest with an average price of just $4.50 (£2.25), whilst Ireland was the country where sex costs the most (!) at almost $18 (£9) on average for a pack – (perhaps due to the hostility of the Catholic Church towards contraception?). Niche dating websites increasingly help picky singles find love

Tired of sifting through hundreds of prospects in the Internet equivalent of a human supermarket, online daters are flocking to boutique-style sites that promise a choosier range of options.

The trend started by catering to specific religions and cultures (JDate for Jewish singles was an early example and is still one of the largest, with about 700,000 members), but there are now sites that revolve around occupations, hobbies, hair colours, diseases and disabilities.

"Online dating, back when it originally was taking off, was a large one-size-fits all mentality," says Michael Carter, president of Passions Network Inc., a New York-based company with 110 niche sites. "Every day there are new sites out there that are focused on specific niche markets - it seems to be all the buzz."

His company runs dating and social networking sites for Scientologists, atheists, gun lovers, horror fans, believers in the paranormal and redhead enthusiasts, along with more mainstream "solid demographic slices." The sites are interconnected, so mustachioed vegan baby boomers can jump between sites reflecting their various interests.

The entire network's membership is about 700,000 people - including tens of thousands of Canadians - and that's been doubling each year, Carter says.

"The underlying concept is that it should be easier to break the ice with people if you share something in common," he says.

But the appeal goes beyond icebreakers, says Gail Laguna, vice-president of corporate communications for Spark Networks, which runs JDate, Asian Singles Connection, Deaf Singles Connection and Military Singles Connection, along with nearly 30 others. Their network includes millions of members and tens of thousands of Canadians, she says, and they generally attract singles looking for serious long-term relationships.

"When it comes time to get married and raise a family, things like religion, ethnicity, traditions, religious practicing habits - they all come into play," she says. "If you're just casually dating, these things are less important to you."

For Burnaby, B.C. resident Linda Schmidt, her faith is so central to her life that it only made sense to look for love on Christian Mingle.

"I'm a Christian and I wanted to find someone who was a Christian, so I didn't really want to waste any time on other sites where I might meet people who weren't," the 35-year-old says.

Three years ago, she went on a first date to a baseball game with Greg. They got engaged five months later, married five months after that and are now parents to 10-month-old Chloe.

"I didn't want to waste a year and a half or two years dating someone if I knew I was going to marry them," says Greg, 33.

In the couple's social circle are three other married pairs who met on eHarmony, a site that uses a complex matching system to let singles specify exactly what they're seeking. Another couple met on the same site that brought the Schmidts together.

"When you have unprotected sex with people you are meeting online, you are playing russian roullette with your health. Safety measures some women use before meeting a man, according to the study, are:

1) Googling him.

2) Running a background check.

3) Not giving any personal information (like address, phone number, etc.).

The study used a survey placed on various online dating services and targetting women. The survey was completed by 740 women of which 568 said they had met someone in person. While 30% had sex on the first date, some were specifically looking for that.
